Congress Just Voted to End the Clock Change Forever. Here Is What You Need to Know.
It finally happened. The House voted 308 to 117 on Tuesday to make Daylight Saving Time permanent across the country. The bill is called the Sunshine Protection Act and it does exactly what it sounds like. No more springing forward in March. No more falling back in November. The clock stays where it is and it stays there for good.
This is one of those rare moments where almost everybody agrees. A Democratic congressman from New Jersey summed it up perfectly. He said he does not really know anybody who wants to change the clock anymore. When a Democrat and Donald Trump are on the same page about something you know it is a commonsense winner.
Trump called the passage of the bill great news for America and has said he will sign it into law if it reaches his desk. The congressman on the House floor who presided over the final vote celebrated by playing the Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun” on his phone as he read the tally. You cannot make this stuff up and honestly it is kind of perfect.
Here is the part that matters though. The bill now heads to the Senate where Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas is already pushing Senate Majority Leader John Thune not to bring it up for a vote. Cotton’s concern is that parts of the country would not see the sun rise until 9am or later in winter under permanent Daylight Saving Time. That is a real concern for states like Alaska, Michigan, and Indiana where winter mornings are already brutal. Thune himself said he is not sure he wants a federal mandate on this.
So here is where things stand. The House delivered. The Senate is the question mark. Again.
The good news is this issue does not break along party lines. 19 states have already passed legislation ready to switch to permanent Daylight Saving Time the moment Congress gives them the green light. The American people are ready. They have been ready for years. Now it comes down to whether the Senate has the spine to finish the job.
Call your senator. This one is easy. It is not immigration, it is not the budget, it is not a culture war flashpoint. It is the one thing almost every American from every walk of life agrees on. Stop changing the clocks. Lock it in. Get it done.

Permanent standard time makes much more sense.
Still has to get through the Senate…and they're a pack of slackers… until it's time to vote themselves a raise 😂
