The Supreme Court Just Ruled on Birthright Citizenship. Here Is What You Need to Know.

Today the Supreme Court ruled 6 to 3 to block President Trump’s executive order on birthright citizenship. Roberts wrote the majority opinion. Three conservatives, Thomas, Alito, and Gorsuch, dissented. It stings. No sugarcoating that.

But here is what the media is not going to tell you. This fight is not over.

Justice Kavanaugh, who sided with the majority, wrote separately to point out something huge. Congress may have the power to address birthright citizenship through legislation. Speaker Mike Johnson heard it loud and clear and was already talking to reporters about it within hours of the ruling. The door is not completely shut.

What the court struck down was using an executive order to do it. One man with a pen. The argument was always that this needs to go through the proper process, and Kavanaugh basically just handed Congress a roadmap.

Right now around 250,000 children are born every year in this country to parents who are here illegally or on temporary visas. That is not a conspiracy theory. That is the Migration Policy Institute’s own number. The policy has real consequences and the American people deserve a real debate and a real vote on it, not a court deciding the country’s future in a 6 to 3 split.

The ruling hurts. But the answer is not to give up. The answer is to make Congress do its job. Call your rep. Hold them accountable. The fight moves to the Hill now and we need to be loud about it.
